The location is nice and the room has a bathtub.
Cons: Not good value for money. Exaggerated decoration and poor sound insulation. The worst was the smell of sewage in the room that was really disgusting. Stay away from this hotel. We stayed only one night due to change in plans and the choice for air-conditioned. We recommend staying the the Riad Babette, that was nice, clean and staff wonderful.

I had a wonderful experience at Mumtaz Mahal. The hotel is beautifully decorated in traditional Moroccan style, with elegant details that give it a warm and authentic atmosphere. My room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my stay, always ready to assist with anything I needed. The location is also perfect — just a short walk from the medina and the beach. I really enjoyed the peaceful ambiance and the charm of this place. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Essaouira.

Cons: Unfortunately, I didn't have a pleasant experience with my booking, starting from the misunderstanding from the staff that led me paying an additional €35 that weren't communicated to me in advance and ending with disgusting dirty bed sheets... Context: 1) I stayed previously in this riad, and wanted to bring my family there, but when checking on bookings for a room for 3 people there was no room available. So, I called directly to inquire if there are rooms of the bookings that can be available. Staff told me that there is only one room available, and it is for 2 people, I made clear that we are three, so they told me "we will add a bed to your room". Nothing mentioned about the cost. I went back to bookings (after the call), looked for 2 adults room and there it was an available room, so when making booking I selected an option to add an extra bed to our room (as the person on the call suggested), again there was nothing indicating that this will come at the extra cost. When we arrived I was told that we have to add €35 for an extra bed... I didn't like that this was not made clear to me beforehand, especially when the hotel had me on the phone (before I made the booking) and after when the booking with a request for an additional bed was made. I talked to the manager (who only spoke french, which is so weird for a hotel of this level, whereas the receptionist speaks English, BUT the manager doesn't! 🚩), and asked to either give me free cancellation of drop the additional fee, since this was not communicated to me in advance. To what she was so on the fence, not letting me speak, speaking over me, I was quite shocked to see a client service manager of a hotel speaking this way, when I was absolutely polite with her, letting her speak over me and interrupt me.

The room I had was spacious and the location is fantastic. In the centre and close to everything you may need. Breakfast was just OK, eggs were cold but the bread was good and always warm.
Cons: The window in the room was making a creaking sound that was a bit disruptive. The Spa has potential but is too close to the entrance making it very noisy and hard to relax. The Wi-Fi is poor so recommend getting data if you need.

I loved staying here as each room is so unique and beautiful, so much detail into all the walls, I loved the traditional Moroccan touches and design of the place, it really has so much beauty. That alone would make me stay here again. However, the staff wasn’t the most helpful and accommodating as I would have hoped for, one morning we came down a little after 1030 for breakfast and they told us they wouldn’t be able to make it for us anymore, so just be aware they aren’t flexible with that policy. Also, it wasn’t very clean, as my feet were dirty after walking on the floors of our room barefoot. And be aware of the loud clock tower right next door chiming all hours of the night, that woke me up a few times. Other than that, we had a great stay! It is in a great location, close to everything!

The main part of the Riad was beautiful and the location and rooftop breakfast was great; however, the WiFi was very unreliable and when I called down to get assistance, I was told they didn’t speak English and call back in the morning. The rooms were spacious and ornate with beautiful detail. The bed was comfortable and the shower was powerful.
Cons: The noise levels were extremely loud. The noise started at 08:00 until 22: 45 hours. There was never a point when the riad was peaceful. The staff never addressed loud guests and screaming children. On one occasion I had to go to reception and ask them to ask a family to silence their screaming child at 22:30 hrs! I appreciate riads echo and have poor sound proofing but this was at times unbearable. The breakfast was so disappointing- considering there was a restaurant in the riad for guests, the options for breakfast was bland. Multiple options of dry bread, boxed jam and a fried egg which is advertised as an omelette. The only pleasant part of the breakfast was the fresh juice. The coffee was poor too. On two consecutive days I had to ask for pepper to be put in the pepper shaker, then got gaslit by the waiter who shook it upside down and tried to tell me there was pepper in it!!?? The apathy of staff was very obvious- most looked incredibly bored and tired. This doesn't inspire guests whatsoever.

They all went the extra mile to make us feel welcomed and comfortable. I highly recommend this Riad. The Spa was like the cherry on the cake, superb!
Cons: Everything was great!

Truly amazing room. Don't touch the coffee. Breakfast was unfortunately poor. No where to smoke as either there is either someone having a massage adjacent to the lobby or there are staff sleeping there so you can't just sit and never conversation or a cigarette. The roof was suggested that after going all the way up there found that there's no seating and no lighting so it was pitch black. For overall the room was stunning and even better than I expected from the pictures so I wasn't disappointed at all it just would have been nice to use areas outside of the room.

Good location, fortunately some of the staff was nice. Thank you Zahar for good service and making us feel welcome
Cons: They only want your money, this old lady was extremely rude and arrogant, wifi doesn't work properly, they accept only cash payments, they make you wait for hours to use spa facilities, no welcome drinks... TOTAL RIP OFF, TO AVOID!!!

This Riad and the rooms are just absolutely stunning, feels like staying in a palace. Our room was nice and specious and we just loved staying there! The location is great too, quiet but close to everything. We would like to especially thank Nouhaila who worked at the front desk and was always helpful and very kind and made our stay all the more special! Nouhaila‘s hospitality, professionalism and kindness is what you expect from any staff member as it makes your stay all the more comfortable. We would recommend anyone to stay here.
Cons: There were some brief electricity outages and no water for a brief moment, but it was fixed very quickly so it didn’t really bother us too much. Some more savoury options at breakfast would have been nice, but we also loved the typical Moroccan breakfast.

The Riad Is STUNNING! The pictures really don't do it justice. Our room was beautiful and the internal space of the property was something out of a movie. Staff was very nice and location is great, inside the Medina, but also 5min from the beach and 2 min from a parking lot (if you rent a car).
Cons: If I have to be picky, I'd say breakfast could have more variety, it's the same every day and If you stay for a few days, it could get a bit boring, but that's the extent of it.

Absolutely the most beautiful hotel with amazing design and decor, incredible bed, so luxurious and comfortable you felt like a sultan stepping into the room and being in it. The bathroom was stunningly beautiful too. Amazing bathtub and sink. The hammam, spa and massage was wonderful, and the restaurant, Riad and rooftop (with sea view) fantastic. Lovely airflow through the rooms, luxurious long curtains flowing with the breeze over our bed, Mumtaz Mahal is a place you want to spend a lifetime in. And the staff are so LOVELY! Especial thanks to Nouhaila at reception for her warm, helpful, gorgeous personality and service, and her lovely colleague on the other day at reception too. The place was spotless so huge thanks to the cleaning staff as well for making our stay so wonderful.

Incredible location. 5 minutes to the beach and 5 minutes to the souks. Right next to the main square is extremely convenient. The Riad is absolutely stunning. The room we had was beautiful And most of the facilities were great. Overall it was a lovely stay, we just thought they could improve on some things slightly to make it the experience they advertise.
Cons: The air con does not work which leads to an uncomfortable night's sleep as it's very humid. We did have the windows open but as it's so central some nights were very noisy so would have preferred windows closed and air con on. The breakfast was not fresh every day and extremely repetitive eating the same 3 types of bread. Would suggest they offer more fruits and maybe yogurts? The drainage in the room was not great so showering in a puddle and the bathroom sink took a few minutes to empty

Cons: No card readers and cash only payment for a big hotel was unbelievable. No kettle in the room and no communal facilities to make tea or coffee. We were leaving at 730 AM to catch a flight but they said they can’t provide breakfast any earlier than their normal time of 0830 AM.When I said most hotels have flexible they have me pancakes but they were cold by next day morning. The staff are friendly but do very little to help you unlike many other hotels. Would have appreciated a cup of tea or coffee at 7 AM as we missed our breakfast !

Absolutely gorgeous and very affordable. Schedule massages (also very affordable) that were much better than what we usually get in the US. Rooms were very large and beautiful.
Cons: I realize we are foreigners in their country, but all the other riads and restaurants could speak some English. There were several at the front desk that we had a lot of trouble communicating with. Realizing also, we don't speak their language either! Just found that English was being used elsewhere to an acceptable level.

Loved this Riad, I would only suggest that the breakfast is the weakness, jam and bread is not a continental breakfast, no eggs, cheese, or meats, This is the only negative on the service. The roof terrace was also disappointing and well below expectation. So in summation, the riad is beautiful, and my message to te RIAD is - my room was great and your staff are great, but you need to improve the quality of your breakfast, and put some thought into landscalping and updating your roof terrace.

The property is beautiful, very well thought out and intricate decor. Bed very comfortable and good WiFi throughout. The room was clean and the man on reception when we checked in and most mornings was lovely. Breakfast was nice apart from one day when there was toasted stale bread. On the first morning of our stay we woke to find a TV show shooting in the hotel. Warning would have been nice as we had planned to spend the rainy day relaxing in the room and getting a massage - but it was too noisy, and we couldn't send out laundry as staff were too busy. We also had to go out in the rain to get between breakfast and the stairs to go to the room as the elevator and main part of the hotel were out of bounds due to filming. The day after the rain there was banging all morning, presumably roof repairs after the rain? Not there fault. Language barrier with staff in the evening and night shift, but nothing major. Sometimes slow to get back into the hotel as the door is locked in the night. Would stay again, but wouldn't rush back.

I’ve had a fantastic stay and felt like a princess living in a real palace. The location is ideal, just next to the port and medina. The room itself is massive and kept warm (even in December). The bed is huge and comfortable with clean bedding. Breakfast is nice, it is served in a restaurant or at the terrace (the choice is yours). The hammam and massage experience is very high standard! Staff members are friendly and helpful. Plenty photo opportunities at this riad. I couldn’t praise this place enough!

The setting was pleasant, with accommodating personnel; a kind elderly woman offered exceptional assistance by cleaning our pram, showcasing both amazing efficiency and friendliness. Another team member at the front desk also displayed commendable warmth and placed our son's medicine in the fridge. However, an incident with the main manager, involving a notable disturbance as the shouted in frustration towards staff and during a phone call, was a point of concern. Accommodations were spacious and aesthetically appointed, complemented by a stunning courtyard. The establishment's location was great.
Cons: The room was nice but missed basics, like fridge, bottled water, safe etc, The shouty manager needs to understand good customer service. Breakfast should be served on the roof terrace and needs to be fresh.

This riad is a real treasure! A mini palace will beautiful architectural features, tiles, carvings, and stone / wood. It was cool and soundproofed. The lavish style is a lovely contrast to the hustle and bustle of the medina, which is a bit dusty and grubby but fascinating. So, coming back to this riad felt like a sanctuary. The location is great, near the bus stop, at the beginning of the medina and near great restaurants and nightlife! The staff are really helpful and warm hearted this is what makes the stay extra special.
Cons: A plunge pool is always a bonus! Sadly, there is only a spa at an extra cost. More choice is needed for breakfast, which is largely bread in different shapes and forms.

Nice rooms. Good location. No possibility to have breakfast in a proper place. The rooftop is abominable! The food itself is ok.
Cons: Air conditioning broken. They were lying about it and we finally stayed (and I didn’t sleep) in a hot room with a fan. Paying seems to be a problem with a lot of guest. They want cash, but if you persist, suddenly a machine turns up, which is broken of course; but then suddenly a signature is enough and they deduct it from your credit card. It’s so predictable!!

The hotel is much nicer than expected for Morocco. The rooms are huge! Bathroom has a double door, bidet, bath tub and shower etc. The area is wonderful. As two female travelers we felt very safe in this hotel and location. The area is less crowded near the opening of the Medina. I regret only spending one night here. We should have skipped Agadir and stayed in essouira 2-3 nights. The spa on site is great. Breakfast on the terrace is nice.
Cons: Typical for Morocco: My back still hurts from the bed. The call to prayer starts early and seems to just keep going. Front desk staff was terse and not super helpful. No view from room. May be typical for riad. The terrace was not as cute as the rest of the hotel. They could add more decor there.

Beautifully restored courtyard. Lovely big rooms. Nice rooftop views for breakfast. Close to the beach, port and souks.
Cons: I liked everything. I would however point out to anyone with a physical disability to be clear if you need a walk in shower. Most rooms have very high sided tiled tubs that are impossible for many people with physical disability. The staff did change the room for us and were kind but it caused a little trouble for them. Maybe request room 15 …it has a walk in

I had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Mumtaz Mahal and I must say, it was an enchanting experience that transported me to a bygone era. The architecture of this hotel is nothing short of breathtaking, making me feel like I had stepped into a different century altogether. Every corner of the hotel exudes an aura of historical grandeur, from the intricately designed archways to the beautifully adorned domes. The attention to detail in replicating the architectural styles of centuries past is truly commendable. The exquisite carvings, ornate patterns, and delicate motifs adorning the walls and ceilings were a visual feast for the eyes. As I walked through the corridors and lounges, I couldn't help but imagine the lives of those who might have lived in such splendid surroundings. What I found particularly captivating was the seamless blend of modern comfort with timeless elegance. The rooms were luxuriously appointed with all the amenities one could ask for, yet the architectural elements remained true to the historical theme. It was as if I was living in a palace from another era, complete with modern-day conveniences. The courtyard, with its lush gardens and serene water features, was a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the atmosphere. It felt like I was transported back in time, enjoying the tranquility of a distant past while being pampered with the service and hospitality of the present. The staff at Hotel Mumtaz Mahal were warm, attentive, and dedicated to ensuring a memorable stay. They were more than willing to share insights about the history and architecture of the hotel, adding an extra layer of depth to my experience.

I really liked the big spacious rooms, with a nice big bad and bathroom. The breakfast was also very delicious and the staff who served us was very helpful and motivated every day. It was a pleasure.
Cons: The personnel behind the counter wasn’t very helpful. They didn’t show us the room and they gave off the impression that we bothered them whenever when we asked a question. In addition, we had to pay in cash which was not mentioned before and therefore was a bit of a hassle. A big part of the ATM’s did not work properly. They told us the machine to pay with card was broken, however I can read in many reviews that this has been the case for a while.

The location of the riad was nice.
Cons: The staff were not communicative or helpful. For example, no information was given about the entrance to be used at night, there was no staff at night and the door was locked, so we were locked out of our accomodation in the middle of the night. There was no clear view of the breakfast options and there was a very long wait for someone to show up at all. Because we spoke no French we asked to be helped in English or to speak with someone who knows English, however people kept talking French or Arabic. The payment method was exceptionally vague, even a (fake) message was sent to us in advance that the payment terminal was not working. On the spot we clarified that we will only pay by card, as indicated online. Then the payment terminal suddenly worked and they unashamedly charged an extra 150 dh. This is a scam. As icing on the cake we had to go home due to force majeure and medical problems. The staff acted very rigidly and refused to consider any compensation or concession. However, the room was immediately put online again to be rented out. Their priority is clearly on making as much money as possible and their approach is not client oriented at all. As for the room itself, it was quite dark, unventilated and the toilet was leaking so the bathroom floor was always wet (and slippery). After 2 weeks in Morocco - and after experiencing many different riads with friendly, understanding staff - our stay unfortunately ended in minor - as an anti-climax - at this riad. So absolutely not recommended.

Great location and beautiful authentic decor.
Cons: Breakfast starts at 8am and would have been better as a buffet instead of a chap running back and forward. The ability to store chilled bottled water in the room and to make tea or coffee would be a great addition, if that’s not too much of a philistine comment! There was a problem with the card machine so had to pay by cash which was inconvenient and we were not informed of this until we were inside the free cancellation time so cancelling was not an option.

The location was good.
Cons: The room was not clean, particularly the bathroom. The floors and baseboards were especially dirty. The breakfast was the same every day. One day, I asked for a 2nd egg, and I was told there is only one egg allowed per guest. So I offered to pay for it. The restaurant is a separate establishment and is not owned by Mumtaz. When we checked in, we were told that we must pay cash for the room. We were surprised because Bookings mentions that they accept Visa and MC. The next day, a different person told us that we only had to pay the taxes in cash. Again, the price breakdown for our reservation did not state this. When we checked out, the owner was there, and she stated that they could not accept payment for taxes with a charge card. She repeatedly shouted at us and said that the city required the taxes in cash. Felt like a scam.

Absolutely stunning building, the whole place is just great to look at and feels very special. The room was equally as impressive and featured a giant, super comfortable bed and beautiful decor. Location is perfect, everything you need is on your doorstep and yet the street is quiet at night. Staff were very welcoming and helpful, breakfast is good too.

excellent location, phenomenal room! amazing bath and breakfast was glorious
Cons: no card machine is embarrassing when you’re charging premium prices. cash machines are expensive and it’s costs 10% to withdraw money… time to sort it out and look after your guests. I’d rather tip the staff who are great. I’d be ashamed if I was the owner and there’s no card machine at a hotel… ridiculous, honestly. i feel so sorry for your staff telling guests that they have to go to a atm for the privilege of staying there. the only hotel/riad IN MOROCCO that asked us that. you should apologise for costing your guests money.

We stayed in three riads on our trip to Morocco and this one was the most beautiful of all -- which is saying something. It truly feels like you're staying in a palace and the value is unbelievable. Service-wise, it was very good, though because it's also a spa & hammam, it feels a little more like a hotel than the family-run riads we stayed in elsewhere. The staff was very friendly and helpful, though, providing good local recommendations and providing a little extra care when our daughter was sick one day. Location-wise, I can't imagine something a whole lot better. This riad is right in the medina and a short walk from the beach and fish market. There is a wonderful ocean view from the rooftop.
Cons: This is a very minor thing, but it would have been nice to have tables that our group could have sat around on top of the roof. Everything up there felt more arranged for couples or a pair of people.

Easy to get there with a 2 minutes walk (parking / drop off is nearby); quiet position, short distance to beach / souk ; huge room. Nice staff , good breakfast on terrace (which was a bit of contrast to the rest of the nice riad) ; Hammam/Spa with friendly staff ;
Cons: Some new chairs on the rooftop would be nice;

The location is fantastic. It's close to the bus stop, restaurants, shops and the coast. It's very easy to find. The place itself is also beautiful. Really stunning on the inside. The room is big and very comfortable.
Cons: The breakfast and the staff. I messaged ahead to ensure that there were gluten free options available for breakfast. We also mentioned it when we arrived. The "gluten free" breakfast was an egg..... that's it. I gave my girlfriend my egg so she had almost a fraction of a meal while I was surrounded by bread and pastries. This was the fourth location we stayed on our trip; it's the only one we didn't go back for a second meal in. While the location and the room were great, the staff were incredibly unhelpful and cold. As with most places, the card machine here was "broken" (Morocco operates on cash) and when I asked where I could get cash from they said "anywhere". When we found out they wouldn't provide us with towels for the beach, I asked where I could by some and they said "in a shop". When asking for anything gluten free for breakfast they just said "No" and when checking out I handed the key to the person behind the desk who just said "Thanks" and went back to their computer. We were never asked if there were any issues, if we enjoyed our stay, if they could do anything for us. When we asked them a question about the local area (like where the nearest cash machine was) it was incredibly hard to get information out of them, having to ask multiple times for directions and such. It was the opposite experience of the other three places we stayed in Morocco. I'm sure it'd be a great place if you're very familiar with the local area, and want to go in/out with no one paying any attention.

The location is good although there is a 6 eur/night parking only available near the port. The painting and colors are something special, so is the bathroom where you feel like a little faraon or something :))
Cons: The furniture is a bit old and even beautifully painted maybe it's time to get replaced accordingly our European opinion. The ventilation was not there and it felt like the room needs it in order t get rid of the humidity.

Property was decorated beautifully, quite honestly one of the prettiest riads I’ve ever stayed in. Location was perfect for quick visits into and out of the medina and if you’re worried about the noise of the call to prayer, it’s tranquil by comparison to other riads. Breakfast is passable, juice and small portion of strawberries were my favourite.
Cons: unfortunately on our final evening we experienced a huge fight between a customer in the restaurant and members of staff and by no means was it handled professionally. The altercation happened quite late in the evening (23:30) subsequently it filtered into the main riad which brought curious customers out of their slumber to view the whole spectacle. this brought my overall opinion of the riad down massively as the staff member involved did very little to diffuse the situation. poor show, really guys, you’ve goto do better. you’ve got a beautiful riad, you’re exceptionally well located but it really just needs the final amount of refinement and you’ve got something that really out classes everything within the median walls. I wish you all the best of luck.

The hotel is spectacular, amazing architecture and decoration. The bed is the biggest I've ever seen and so comfy, lovely hot shower and the breakfast is really good, lots of food. The staff are all so lovely and helpful and speak great English as well as French. Location is perfect for everything, two mins to the bech, the port and it's right in the medina so perfect for exploring the souks, city wall, etc.
Cons: I was excited for the massive and spectacular looking bathtub, but it would take about four hours to fill, and by the time it's even ankle deep, the water is gone cold already, but the shower was lovely so wasn't a problem and they also have a hammam downstairs so you can just do that instead:)

Situated at the edge of the medina, it is perfectly positioned to explore Essaouira and to access the lovely beach in the other direction. The room was very comfortable and, despite the February chill, was very warm inside. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty.

Very beautiful riad. Great breakfast, which you can enjoy on the terrace with a nice view.
Cons: In the description there is a photo of the beautiful wellness room with the indoor pool. But in the reality there was no water in the pool. The room is used for massage. The light was switched off. So you unfortunately neither can use it as a pool nor see its beauty.

This is the most beautiful palace i have ever had the chance to stay in! It is almost like a royal palace. There was so much work put into every single little detail! The rooms and hotel are sublime and detailed from ground to ceiling!! The bathroom was like a real private spa with giant bathtub! There was unlimited hot water so no issue to fill the big tub! Sweet Noella at the counter is just one of the sweetest hosts we met on our Maroccan journey!
Cons: - Breakfast was very chaotic and basic - NO CARD PAYMENTS..... 'machine is broken'..... Always the same excuse, i really dont like it when the owners think of themselves before the guests... In Essaouira its not easy to find cash and to pay for the room you need to take out money several times because of the limit imposed on ATM takeout..... A customer first mindset would never expect customers to have to search for hours after ATM just to pay the bill of a High end hotel.

This is super large ornate room in a beautiful riad. There is a small restaurant attached.
Cons: With one exception the staff were surly and unhelpful. Despite the claim they accepted credit cards they did not and expected us to shoulder the full cost of currency conversion to cash. The restaurant wanted cash payment for each meal and couldn't give change. We were not shown around on arrival or given help with our luggage. My vegetarian wife ordered a vegetable couscous but was served a lamb couscous tried to blame her then said just eat around the meat, too difficult to remake, but they eventually did. Always rushed out of restaurant even though it was not busy (no surprise).

The riad is located steps away from the Bab Menzeh entrance to the Medina, with a parking just in front of the entrance itself and the sea at a stone’s throw (either the ocean and the bay). We had a fantastic large room at the first floor (even though we had to remember the concierge that we booked the room for three, and our daughter’s bed was missing). Extremely nice traditional furnishing, and a very large and modern bathroom with a giant marble bath tub. The hotel has as well a reastaurant by its side. There, is where you get the breakfast, very nice.

It was a beautiful decorated riad and the receptionist was soooo lovely. I loved the giant bath tub and 60 min of foot massage. The room was so spacious and the decorations of the tiles were breathtaking.

Delightful decor, not unique by Moroccan standards but very pleasant. Spa was nice and relaxing. In outskirts of souk/medina with parking in public harbour car park. This is probably the best Riad in Essaouira. Perfect location, just inside the median wall so quick walk to the beach but also quick walk into the hustle of the medina. It’s located just off a main walkway but down a slightly quieter street so feels really safe and secure. I’d highly recommend the Hamam at Mumtaz Mahal even if you don’t get a chance to stay.

The architecture is beautiful, bathroom was well equipped and water pressure was great. The location was perfect - right in between the beach and the Medina with several great food options nearby.
Cons: The room wasn’t ready when we arrived even though we had indicated an accurate time of arrival. We couldn’t pay by card and this had not been mentioned at the time of booking, we had to go to the bank nearby to get cash instead. Pillowcases did not seem cleaned - there were dirt marks on one and the other was ripped. All other places we stayed at in Morocco provided a water bottle and mint tea but we did not receive either here. Finally, there is a city bell that rings throughout the night, although this may be heard in other riads as well.

The property is located very close to central square and it was easy to get there to eat or to walk. It is a very nice riad, one of the best looking on our trip to morocco.
Cons: The staff was unpleasant, except of the receptionist girl. The owner wasn’t approachable at all. One of us had food poisoning and we asked for a first aid kit and a thermometer; they didn’t have either. Not only, the owner was very annoyed of my request and she replied in a rude way. She wanted end the conversation immediately by being unhelpful. The waiter intervened by saying that it is not necessary to have a first aid and a thermometer and that he works in hospitality for a long time; therefore (quote) “he knows better than me”. We were told card payment was not accepted. Minutes after this event money were taken directly from my bank account through Booking.com without my consent. This is after we kindly asked whether we could cancel the following night due to the sickness and that we had to head back home urgently. Very unprofessional and dishonest. There is no fruits for breakfast. The room was too dark, the heating didn’t work. The owner ruined our stay instead of making us to feel like home.

We loved everything about this hotel! It was quiet, clean, the rooms were much bigger than expected and the bed was very comfortable. This is probably the most beautiful place we've ever stayed! The staff was amazing, as well and they were very courteous and tried hard to accomodate our special requests.

Oh wow! What do I say about this place. It was an awesome experience, comfortable clean and cozy. This is the most authentic Moroccan/Arabic themed hotel we saw. The Ros are so classy, comfortable and cozy. Well located and away from the extremely noisy places. The terrace area was fantastic with a beach view to have breakfast or other meals. We are vegetarians and they made sure to have enough vegetarian options. I will insist that anyone and everyone going to Essaouira must stay here, it's just fabulous. We would also like to thank Amal who made sure that we have a comfortable stay and helped us in arranging for a taxi pick-up from the airport. The hammam, spa and massage in the Riad is also fabulous with professional staff.

Sooooo much room, soooo exotic and palatial. Only problems were a door that didn’t close properly and rather poor lighting in the room if you want to read or write.

One of the best stays we had within the budget especially if you are travelling with a toddler. The satff has been extremely polite and helpful. They managed to get milk and other essentials for the toddler even if it was not a mealtime. They were also very prompt in arranging taxis and other appointments as requested.

AMAZING! Old, but well maintained. Rooms are huge but can get a bit cold at night as the AC heating did not work.

Loved our stay at this palacial riad! Rooms are large with high ceilings and grandeur giving an otherworldly experience. The riad is also very well located near the beach and Medina. Highly recommended stay!

We really enjoyed our short stay at Riad Mumtaz Mahal. The room is beautifully decorated. Breakfast is very nice up on the terrace. And the Riad is in a great location.

The staff seemed generally nice and helpful although one of them seemed rude and self absorbed. The rooms were truly incredible, but if it wasn't broken air con in one room it was a broken fridge and phone in another. Also some lights worked others didn't. Good location.

The room was gorgeous (white room in main image) but there was a lack of attention to detail. Light switches that did nothing, wobbly shelves, plugs with no electrity, TV didnt work, phone didnt work. No wifi in room. When I reported the issues to the receptionist, she insisted that the wifi worked (even though I took screenshots showing it didnt) and said for the repairs, no one would be around until 10.30pm. At 10.30 no one tried to contact us and as it was only 1 night´s stay we let it go. Tax was higher than advertised about 6 Euros for 1 night (55MAD), which you are told to pay up front. I was disappointed as the visual is there but pretty much everything else was lacking. We spent the rest of our time in Essaouira in a smaller local riad.

Wow this was just such an exotic riad. We loved the both rooms we stayed in. Staff were great breakfast everything you needed and more. Location was perfect quiet ally just off the main walk area. Value for oney exceptional. Essaouira is a wonderful relaxed friendly environment where you can get to speak and be involved with local life.

This was our second stay at Mumtaz Mahal - both booked through Hotels.com On both occasions, the Riad did NOT know that we'd booked a specific room and I don't know if the fault lies with Hotels.com or with MM but it's not acceptable to offer people the option to choose a room and then not honour that. Luckily after one night in another room, we were able to move to the one we'd booked. I love this place. The total 'over-the-top' decor, the enormous beds, the marble bathrooms are all delightful. Breakfast on the roof is ok but nothing exciting. They could do with putting in a bit more shade as even in December we were roasting at 9.30 in the morning. We love this place and when the price is good, it will always be on our shortlist. But I recommend to write to the MM ahead of your trip and reconfirm your chosen room.

This place is a delight. We liked it so much we stayed two more nights and stayed in another room. Almost all the staff is women who speak excellent French and good English and no one tried to sell us tours or anything. The rooms are huge and unlike many riads there are several rooms that have windows to the outside. The bathrooms are amazing with huge tubs, one of the ones we had was 6 by 4 feet and both were deep soakers. It's in a great location just at the edge of the Medina and there is view of the water from the terrace. It is a riad so the beds are pretty hard and the wifi was pretty poor but it was so pretty and the staff so nice we didn't care. The staff arranged my cooking class and a private taxi for our drive back to Marrakesh. We stayed in Mina and Mandara, Mina is a beautiful blue room with a huge tub and window to the outside and Mandara has a huge bathroom with separate shower and tub and a french door window in the bathroom and bedroom, both rooms have seating areas and desks. The rooms like most rooms in riads are dark. The courtyard doesn't have a pool only a fountain and there is also a cover sitting area. The riad has a removable cover so no worrying about the weather. The breakfast also included eggs instead of just breads and yogurt. I would be so happy to stay here again!

The hotel and the rooms are absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, we've got a room with a broken AC which spoiled the whole experience quite a bit. There was fan provided but it was too loud to leave it on for the night. Neither of us had a good night sleep during our stay. We also had to ask twice for shampoo as we didn't have any in the room. The TV was broken too. Not sure if the beauty of the hotel could make up for all those things. The breakfast was quite nice but the same every morning. We were staying for only 2 nights so it was ok.

Beautiful riad in a good location. The pool was empty during our stay and we were told that the pool/hammam was separate from the hotel and we would have to pay extra to use it.

So while the decor of this building and the rooms is breathtaking, there are a couple of drawbacks: the beds are incredibly hard as per Moroccan standard, and for all their traditional glory the hotel itself, and it's infrastructure is incredibly old. Lights may or may not turn off wall plugs or example, and may or may not function as supposed to.. it's the living embodiment of Insha'allah. Also the hotel staff are not exactly fluent in English which leads to not really bringing across personality. All interactions can feel pretty wooden if you don't speak French or Arabic, so arm yourself with google translate. The roof terrace is nice, but like the rest of Essaouira; in need of some love, but all in all not an unpleasant stay; just a quirky one.

Wonderful and luxurious room. We felt like royalty. Delicious Moroccan breakfast. No hair dryer in the room, and the one in reception was not available. I would totally recommend it to my friends.

Generally a good experience. Be forewarned...THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS. Room amenities were fairly limited. Mini bar was empty and no bottled drinking water in rooms. Did not try the restaurant but read favorable reviews. Simple but ample free breakfast on the rooftop terrace was great. VERY friendly staff. Room could have been a little cleaner but I wasn't expecting a Ritz Carlton. Very reasonably priced.

Great location, large comfy room, comfortable bed. Included breakfast was very good continental style with fresh juice and croissants. Lack of window to the outside in room only negative but that is a feature of riads in general.

The hotel is beautiful and the decor almost overwhelming. Our room was a delight but the Hotels.com listing said it had a 'harbour view' which was totally misleading. NONE of the rooms at Mumtaz Mahal has a harbour view. However, four rooms do have external windows. The room was very large and beautiful. The service was a little 'iffy' - if you ASKED the reception ladies told you more or less what you wanted to know. If you didn't ask, they told you nothing. 1st morning we went up to the roof for breakfast and there was nothing and nobody. Reception had not told us that we needed to go down and ask for it to be served. Roof terrace - even in December - is very hot and lacking in shade. Breakfast is the same EVERY day and rather boring but plenty of food. Wifi is hit and miss and the code we were given was incorrect. The bathroom was beautiful but totally let down by a cheap, ineffective shower head that wouldn't stay on the wall. Disappointing as clearly a lot of money went into the design and was spoiled by poor fixtures and fittings. We got a great price and if we could get that again, I think we'd return. Having stayed in many different riads and dars, the one thing that was missing here was a strong sense of personality from the staff.

Stunning building with beautiful features – but unfortunately the lack of supervision/management and owner’s presence visible – for example water feature in the entrance without water. Staff friendly but very limited English. Limited information on arrival – no maps or information given – not even what and where one can take breakfast. We booked the place because of the pool and “spa”. On arrival we were told that we must pay D 150 to use the pool, but also that the pool was out of order. Then we booked the hamman and 30 minute paid more or less the same as the accommodation bill. The hammam was uncomfortable and dirty, the massage below average – we were not even offered a cup of tea or water, although I even asked before we entered that we would like some tea. Poor quality breakfast – we asked for breakfast at 08h00 and then only received at 08h30 – without apology. On the upside - Excellent location – right in the medina and walking distance to the port and beach, but in a quiet accessible alley. We will not book this property again and believe one can do much better elsewhere.

We stayed 5 nights at the riad. When out AC stopped working , we were moved to another room with no problem. We even booked an extra night so we could stay in a different room too. Each one is different and special in its own way. The staff were great and always smiling. They even served up breakfast during Ramadan for us inaccustomed to how it works. The location was spot on. Easy to find in and out of the best part of the city. Easy to get a taxi. And not a two mile trek through labyrinth medina to find it. Beautiful interior to come home to.
