We have considerable experience of Riads in Morroco. This is a very attractive building in a good location. However, we were not offered a collection service from the station, and our taxi driver could not find it. The Riad is poorly signposted and it was only after several false starts that a guide found it. We then climbed three flights of narrow stairs to find there was no welcome drinking water in the room, no information on the wifi service, and no way of contacting the staff. We were finally moved to a very pleasant room on the ground floor. So, a good hotel if the information is improved.

The Riad itself was beautiful, very sheltered and beautiful bird sound in the courtyard was amazing. The bedroom and en suite were lovely and looked over the courtyard. Rooftop pool was exactly as expected being on the roof of a Riad. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The only downside and disappointment with this property was the fact that it is advertised as having spa facilities on site and even does as far as stating massage and manicure. This was a major factor in us booking the Riad, wanting to have a hammam spa at the end of our holiday so we felt the property had been falsely represented and that was frustrating.

A nice old Riad in the Centre of the Medina. Unfortunately significant maintenance needs doing at the property, with the cental fountaub looking worse for wear, the balcony fountain not working at all and some much needed painting required. When booking the Riad, dont be allured by the nice view of the pool and central gardens. There is a small second Riad which you may be staying in around 100 meters away with no pool and much much smaller central garden. You won't know where your room is until arrival unfortunately. Reception will organise an airport transfer for you at the price of 25 Euro's. Never accept this, they dont send an executive taxi and a normal ride from the Airport to the Medina has a set price of 150 Dirham (15 Euro's) meaning the hotel is pocketing a almost 50% of the fee each time. Mint tea is 30 Dirham in the Riad but 10 to 15 in popular cafes outside with no better service. Breakfast is acceptable but there is no variation on a day to day basis. The showers are less than ideal and something akin to a 1 or 2 star hotel (rather than 4) with an old showerhead in a plastic clip which isnt designed for the head and cannot support it. Nadia at reception is wonderful and couldnt be more helpful. Unfortunately a male porter was very unhelpful and refused to take a card payment of more than 50 euro's as it was not enough leading us to have to withdraw cash and pay the transaction fees for such.

An elegant and simple place at the center of the medina. A wonderful room up a lovely winding stairs at this 200 year old Riad, and the friendly staff was always available for our three night stay. Within walking distance to the main square in Marrakech.

Room very small Dark, shower not easy to use, uncomfortable. Dining room very cold, lighting problems. Food good to start with but went down in quality and quantity as week went on. However, staff tried to be helpful, friendlyetc. It is the building not the people. They moved our room to another building after two uncomfortable nights. This was better but shower still not fully function able.

Pretty and quiet riad very close to the Medina. The staff is very kind and helpful. The rooms were fine. The air-conditioning and wifi could have been stronger. The food is ok, but is expensive. I suggest just having it on one night for the experience, because the courtyard and service are really lovely parts of the dinner. Breakfast is good and free, and if you need to leave earlier than breakfast hours, the staff will accommodate you without any charge. The pool is on a nice rooftop terrace. It is about one foot deep, so it is only for cooling off. The riad is in a good location in a quiet, safe alley that is about 5 minutes walking to the square.

It was one of the best hotels I've ever stayed, probably just because it represents the old city culture, it suddenly brings the charming experience just the way it is! Small but cosy rooms, nice pool on the terrace top, peaceful courtyard with birds and couple of tortoises just made me feel totaly relaxed. Staff couldn't do enough to add to the comfort of my stay, my airport pickup and drop off was welcoming and friendly, they booked me a camel ride and arranged the booking to my chosen spa. All staff were communicating well enough and were extremely kind. On my check-out day they even served me the personal breakfast out of breakfast hours (6:30)! Can't ask for more! The only thing can can put off the fussy guests is the poor wifi in some certain places in the hotel, I guess , because the one in my room was only available in the bathroom.. Oh well, it didn't upset me because I didnt come there for Internet ! Brilliant stay, thank you Riad Catalina x

A lovely quiet Riad with friendly helpful staff. The Tiled courtyard is pretty with trees and shrubs, a fountain, fantail doves, small birds and three tortoises! Wonderful to come back to the solace of this after the bustle and noise of out side and have a delicious cup of mint tea. The food was good and suited our taste.

An enjoyable 3 night stay. Hotel staff were helpful and very assuming, leaving you to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. A great location for the souks and busy square. Breakfast is lovely as the courtyard is beautiful, typically morrocon. The roof terrace is lovely to relax and order drinks, although you won't get too wet as the pool isn't very deep! Small rooms, but enough space for a short stay.

This traditional Riad is in a great location in the Medina and is just a couple of minutes walk from La Koutoubia and Jeema El Fna. It is easy to find as soon as you get your bearings but, if arriving by plane, it's well worth asking them to take care of the transfer for you. A member of staff will meet you from the taxi and carry your bags the short walk to the Riad. We booked a standard room. It was comfortable enough but very clean with a great view over the courtyard garden, The Riad itself is just beautiful, an oasis of calm in the middle of a hectic city. The staff are welcoming and polite and just can't do enough for you.

Staff friendly enough. Place clean, but looking tired. Room should have been a double, but was a twin instead as they were over booked and initially tried to place us in a house 140m away! Breakfast as basic as it gets, dried baguette, cold pancakes, jam, one very small orange juice, and warm coffee. Would I stay here again, in a word - no. Also charged local taxes when checking out, which I was unaware of. Thought I had paid for all before leaving UK.

Before you read this review, you should realize that my husband and I are very easy travelers. We don't expect much from a hotel and typically shop hotels based on location as opposed to creature comforts. While the location of the Riad Catalina was excellent, and the main areas were beautiful and seemed well maintained, our room was lacking. There were bugs everywhere. The shower did not drain and flooded the floor. The room itself appeared to be nice, but generally I just felt dirty after staying there for a night. Granted, we did not lodge a formal complaint to the management and they may have been more than willing to move us. But- given the choice of hundreds of beautiful Riads in Morocco, I might give this one a pass.

This riad is full of character and the staff very friendly. It lived up to our expectations as the decor is traditional and we were delighted to be upgraded free of charge to a lovely suite which was full of Morrocan charm. We ate in on the first night and the food was authenitic and plentiful. Unfortunately it was too cold to try out the rooftop pool and make use of the terrace. Our teenage boys enjoyed the whole experiece and we have come away with very fond memories.

Riad Catalina is a well-maintained spot that oozes with rustic charm. My wife and I were a bit worried during our taxi ride from the airport. We didn't know what to expect about the area in which we'd be staying, and having to walk through back alleyways to get to the riad didn't do much to assuage our concerns. The riad itself, however, was extremely peaceful and picturesque. The staff was very nice, and the roof offered a beautiful veiw of the city. We loved that the riad was quiet enough to afford us some much-needed peace and quiet, but close enough to the square and the souks to frequent those locations. Would definitely recommend this place!

Riad Catalina is a haven within the bustle of the Medina. It is ideally situated close to the main square, but not too far into the maze of alleyways so you can find your way back easily. The staff are great and always on hand to provide tips and recommendations of places to go. The rooms were comfortable and air conditioned and the roof terrace with plunge pool was beautiful. You can also have a meal in the Riad and they serve alcohol and have wi-fi in the communal areas. I would definitely go back!

This was my second visit to Riad Catalina. I love the location and the proximity to the main souk coupled with the intimacy of a small hotel. The staff are all exceptionally friendly, and due to the small scale of the hotel you really do feel that personal service. The rooms are small, but I feel that adds to the charm, and breakfast in the main courtyard is lovely. The pool is a more of a plunge pool on the roof of the hotel, but very welcoming after a day sightseeing around the town. The alley to the hotel on first arrival is daunting, but is well lit at night, and not at all threatening or an area to be concerned about.

beautiful character . traditional decor , the main reason for booking this particular hotel. Read many of the reviews and it was even more beautiful than I was expecting. Every room having its uniqueness. I think we had the " cupboard" room but although small, which didn't bother us, it was very cool which to me was the most important thing when the temp outside is over 30 !! Lovely friendly and helpful staff. Lovely breakfast too.

My wife and I recently booked our first trip to Marrakech as our first getaway without our son. I won't make this a review of the city. But if you have never been there, it is a wonderful adventure. The Riad Catalina is renovated in a traditional style. If you enjoy tile mosaics, hanging lamps, and classical moroccan decor, you will enjoy this hotel. From the very moment you enter the riad from the large wooden door you can appriciate the peaceful courtyard and enjoy your first mint tea on moroccan style couches. The staff is absolutely committed to providing you a first rate experience. We called ahead and a very nice attendant was able to schedule transportation from the airport for us (cost 20 euros). The Riad is located down a well lit alley. So, we were met at a pickup point by someone from the hotel. When we wanted to take a camel tour of the palm groves, the attendant at the front desk easily scheduled the whole outing for us including transportation. One thing that I do have to mention, the hotel room we stayed in was on the smaller side by U.S. standards. It had a 140cmx200cm bed that was extra firm. There was less than 1 meter between the bed and the walls on either side. So, I would consider getting a deluxe room there vs. the standard one if you are easily cramped. Overall, this riad was a great place to spend our getaway. If we return to Marrakech, we will stay there again.

This is no Hilton but if you want the Hilton why are you in Marakesh? Riad Catalina is just what I expected a Riad to be .... Moroccan! Just 5 mins from the main square, Down several short dark alleys, through a solid arched wooden door that we had to stoop to get through... And into an oasis of sunshine, trees, birds and sunshine . Bedrooms above that all look onto the central shared courtyard where we ate our breakfast. Standard room offered crisp white sheets, en suite with a powerful shower, was very clean and compact, very green !! Lovely shared plunge pool rooftop terrace ..where we laid and chilled after walking miles round the town.and listened as the mosques called the locals to prayer ...Breakfasts competent.. Dinner not so good ..

This is a lovely riad with one or two drawbacks. The water from the shower drained very slowly so you had to stand in two inches of it. When you arrive if it's evening you have no idea how to get out of the alleys where it is located to the main square, which is actually only a short walk away, but you can't take a taxi because the alleys are too narrow. So you might not be able to go for a walk until the next day when you can find your way around. The food is excellent but it seems that they don't really want guests to eat there because the prices are so high. We ate there the first night and there was one set meal with no price advertised. Afterwards I asked how much it was and found out it was 25 euros per person, which is about four times as much as food anywhere else in Marrakech. It was a nice meal but I wouldn't want to pay that price for that meal in Europe, let alone in Africa. The staff were very helpful though and an Expedia rep provided information about excursions and met us at the hotel on our first morning so that we could quickly make plans. I would stay there again, but not eat there at that price.

Riad Catalina is a lovely little hide away from the hustle and bustle of the old city. Great location, we walked to many of the places to see and then in the evening, cooled off in the rooftop pool. Our room was clean and cosy but quite small, but given the age and design of the building( with a central courtyard) I could understand why. Free WIFI a bonus too. My one word of warning is that the hotel entrance is not easy for a first timer to find, so when you get dropped off by the taxi, be prepared for local boys to try to help you with your luggage through a maze of turns down alleyways eventually to the door and then expect cash rewards, even when you did not ask for their help! In hindsight, I see that this kind of thing happens all the time, but it just caught me off guard.

This riad was easy to access in the Medina. Our taxi dropped us at the gate and a man with a cart took our luggage, and us, to the Riad. On our departure the staff helped us out with our luggage. The staff were wonderful, very helpful and all spoke English. Rooms were neat and tidy and being a riad, they all had their own special character - no two the same. Of course you do have to be prepared to climb stairways in accomodation such as this. We ate in and had a wonderful meal. We wished we had eaten in the next night too, when we were disappointed at a highly recommended restaurant - much better food at the riad. The location was great for getting to the main square in Marrakesh - you just had to run the gauntlet of shop owners trying to lure you in to their particular shop. This riad has a wonderful leafy courtyard and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

The location is great and near to everything, yet away from the bustle. Staying in a Riad is a unique experience. The staff were excellent and so very friendly and helpful. The courtyard is beautiful and very restful. A lovely place to have a drink or a meal, or just to sit and relax quietly. The breakfasts were only average but the two evening meals we had were good. The only problem was our room and in particular the bathroom. We couldn't have got a cat into it, let alone swing it. We booked a standard room but would recommend anyone considering this riad to upgrade. Despite this we had a great time and would stay there again, but in a bigger room.

Lovely Riad with very helpful and pleasant staff. Only disappointment was the size of the room. Granted you don't spend a lot of time in your room but when the bathroom/toilet door doesn't shut and you are banging your elbows and feet on things due to the lack of room it starts to get a little annoying after 5 days.

Beautiful Riad, exceptional staff always ready to help in a great location just 10 minutes from Place Jema El-Fna in the center of Marrakech. If we go back to Marrakech, we will stay at Riad Catalina again. Quick advices: 1. arrive in the day time, as the Riad is in the back of a little street, hard to find at night. 2. We recommend enjoying the breakfast every day, always full and diversified. A great start of the day. 3. The location is perfect, as you can get to the souks, the Place Jema El Fna, the Saadian Tombs, the Palaces Badi and Bahia all in 10 minutes or less by foot. Enjoy Marrakech and Riad Catalina.

Excellent riad (guest house) with an excellent location. The caretakers were friendly and kind. If you are looking for an authentic and quiet place in Marrakesh this is it. I would not recommend Riad Catalina. We stayed in Riad Catalina at the end of December and the nights were very cold. As the doors to the public areas and corridors were kept open it was bitterly cold every time we left our room. Fortunately the heater worked very well in the room and this was very charmingly decorated. We only ate breakfast in the hotel as the three course evening meals that were on offer were very expensive by Moroccan standards.. I would recommend eating out in the local Moroccan restaurants or on the Jemaa el Fna where we paid considerably less. On one evening my partner was not feeling well so we explained this to the hotel staff and asked if the kitchen could prepare a sandwich or small snack for him to eat in our room. Despite the fact that there was no one else in the dining room and the kitchen staff had nothing to do at that moment, we were told that it was only possible to have the three course meal. We found this a very unhelpful attitude

the hotel is down a few alleyways however when you walk through their door way it is a delight. It's a traditional Moroccan building full of character. It is well looked after and the staff are charming and helpful nothing seems too much trouble. The rooms are clean and comfortable though ours was small (we asked for twin beds) but it suited our needs as we only wanted a place to sleep . Having said that we did spend more time at the hotel than we normally do whilst away as it was hot and our afternoons were spent sunbathing by their lovely roof top pool. We never heard any criticism from any other guests during our stay. It is situated in the Medina s.Not the poshest part of Marrakesh but full of life and character. I would definitely visit this hotel again.

The hotel is hidden away down some narrow alleys but was easy to find thanks to the numerous signs on the wall pointing to the hotel and the directions from my cab driver. I was greeted by very friendly staff who immediately offered me some mint tea to drink while filling in some paperwork. My room was very clean and comfortable and in the morning I had a very nice continental style breakfast in their wonderfully relaxing hotel courtyard. The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk from the main square 'Jemaa el-Fnaa' where all the action is in the evening. Overall I was very happy with the hotel and would definitely recommend it to friends visiting Marrakech.

Riad Catalina is right in the heart of Marrakesh and undeniably superbly positioned for exploring the Medina. It's charming and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are small and as this is a traditional Riad there is no heating - a little damp and chilly in the cooler seasons. Stay here if you want a traditional experience, but do not expect the last word in comfort.

Stayed here for one week in October 2011. Lived up to all the excellent reviews. Perfect location for the old town, markets and main square. Staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. Food was great and accomodation was beautifully traditional. A haven of peace a stones throw from the buzz of the street activity. The roof top sun terrace and pool are a great place to relax. If you want a truly Morrocan experience then I highly recommend this Riad.

The Catalina has a perfect central position 5 minutes from the main square, although the route out to the main street is via a very dark alley, fine generally but could easily be disconcerting. The riad has perfect rustic charm, but rustic being the correct term, we had the royal suite at quiet a substantial premium for 7 days, you would expect to have a telephone which worked, but unfortunately this was not the case, a shower which could not be fixed in position so the only way to use it was as a hand held unit and a toilet which did have a door but unfortunately this did hit the toilet as you opened and closed it so to say space was tight in these area's would be an understatement. This being said the staff are fabulous and most helpful, the courtyard is a sea of tranquility and beautiful. The breakfast was always plentiful and diverse, and the in-house evening meals a pure pleasure. A wonderful relaxing plunge pool, but this is limited to around 6 sun beds, so if the riad is busy this area can become quiet congested early in the day. All in all a beautiful well decorated and perfected situated riad but nearer 3.5* rather 5* as previous quoted.

What an oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. You walk into a lovely courtyard filled with plants, centered by a fountain. You see turtles, birds, and are immediately greeted with an offering of delicious mint tea! The rest of your stay will be much the same. The food in the Riad is wonderful, the staff is friendly and helpful. Our room was a tad small, with a bed that was a bit challenging for a couple, one of whom is 6 ft 3- but that is the only challenge I can think of from a wonderful stay at Riad Catalina.

Great experience! The staff was friendly and helpful, the food was lovely, and the riad itself is beautiful. The only minor cons are that it is a little difficult to find initially (like most) and it's about a 7 minute walk to the jma-el-fnaa (we thought it was closer). But it was a great place and I will definitely stay here again.

My wife and I would strongly recommend this hotel. The taxi from the airport drops you approx. 350 yards from the hotel and an we were accompanied down a series of alleys to the hotel. I get the impression that most riads initally need a bit of help to find. Its location is very convenient - about a 5min. walk to the square. The area is quite safe and we never felt threatened. The riad staff were always extremely polite and helpful. Continental breakfast is very good. The swimming pool is small but useful for a cooling dip as opposed to a serious swim. We paid a bit extra and had a premium room/suite - something which I would recommend. For the record, my wife thought the style of the room was excellent. Ask for 104. ps This is the first time I have ever written a review - hope it is OK. pps The discerning gentleman should spoil himself and go for a wet shave, costing £1-50, at the old codger's place on the road to the square, you will not get a closer shave anywhere.

We as a couple wanted to stay in the centre of Marrakech to get a proper feel for the city and the buzz, this idylic Riad didn't disappoint! It's location is just fantastic with most things being a short walk away. Once you've found it and walk inside the big door it's like a little oasis of calm. The rooftop pool albeit small was perfectly adequate to cool us down on the days it hit 48 degrees! The sound of the prayers we found magical and we hope to return one day. The staff were extremely pleasant and accomodation always having a smile and a nod and rushing off to fetch you whatever you required wether it be cigarettes from a nearby store or some cold bottled water. The food also was well worth trying one evening...Just don't tread on the tortoises' we found one right under the step of our suite so he had a lucky escape! Thank you to everyone at Riad Catalina for making our stay so very memorable also, if you are worried about street sellers etc a polite 'no thankyou' accompanied with a smile seemed to work and we weren't hassled much at all, one pick pocket tried his luck by shoving a tshirt under our noses but soon ran off once we realised what he tried to do, just be sensible, cross body bags for ladies, zips fastened and no wallets hanging out your trousers for gentlemen. We never once felt threatened or ripped off, ask taxis to use the tariff or agree a fayre before setting off, carry plenty of small change for tips and you can't go wrong First Class Holiday

We were on a family trip to Morocco with our 8 and 13 yr old children - plan was high intensity Marrakesh for a few days then off to the beach at Essaouira. Riad Catalina was our base for the first bit. After a budget air trip in to Marrakesh leaving the airport in the dark for the short taxi ride to the Riad was a bit focussing...a discussion with the despatcher made sure that the driver was going the right place and then you arrive at the medina where you decamp to a chap with a trolley down ever smaller alleys - arriving magically at a big cedar door through which you are welcomed...and any travel stress melts away. Great traditional riad - accept the architecturally driven room compromise from international blandness; the small pool is great for a cooling submersion after a day in a great hot arabic city. Staff were great with all helpfulness. The combination of style (not very shabby chic), location and plain calming refuge makes this a great choice for a Marrakesh stay.

Its a very pretty Riad and we were very happy with the proximity to the Square...its tucked away into this maze that's far away from the noises of the Square and yet only takes 5 mins to reach the Square Very friendly and helpful staff....ask for Nadia...she speak several languages. They made restaurant bookings too and were just delightful. They will also for Euros 20 arrange cab from and to airport including escort to the Riad when you reach the Medina.

A lovely traditional Riad. Really peaceful. Very helpful staff. We upgraded to the Royal Suite at a modest charge, as our allocated rooms were small, but the suite was great. Breakfast was good with local fresh pastries, great coffee, bread and fresh orange juice We had dinner one night and that was fine. The situation was very good. All the main sites were within easy walking distance. Our stay of four nights gave us long enough to have a private day trip to the Atlas Mts which the Riad arranged and was well worth doing. Our airport pick up was spot on even though we were 45mins early. We would thoroughly recommend this Riad but be aware the cheapest rooms are small.

We stayed in room 5 I think.. A small room overlooking the central courtyard. The hotel was clean and close to everything. The Riad staff were amazing. They were very helpful and didn't try to push anything on us, in comparison to many riad owners in Morocco. This made for a very relaxed stay and I would definitely go back again.

This was a beautiful riad with wonderful, helpful staff. Most spoke good English. When we got there, it was dark and the taxi left us at the entrance to a dark alley way and told us to walk. We were a little nervous but there it was. It was absolutely beautiful and once we did the alley in daylight, we found it to be perfectly safe. The location is great near the market and souks. The only thing is that they take NO credit cards. There was a city tax that they asked for at the end of the stay that we did not know about. We almost did not have the cash to cover this and our taxi fare to the airport. I wish they had warned us at check in. But other than that, we were very pleased with the accomodations.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Riad Catalina. The staff was very pleasant and most helpful, the food was good (besides breakfasts we enjoyed a very nice dinner in the courtyard one evening), and the location was convenient for walking to the main square and other sights in the old city. Our room was tiny and a bit tired looking but rather quaint. The main courtyard of the riad was lovely, with a variety of lounging areas and tables and chairs complete with birds singing in the trees. If you like spas, do try a hammam while in Marrakesh. My sister and I had a wonderful experience at one, and definitely got our money's worth and more.

This is a lovely little Riad hidden down an alleyway - so secret that you could easily walk past the big wooden door. Inside is a tranquil little courtyard inhabited by cheeky sparrows, the odd bulbul and several fantailed doves. You are greeted by a tray of sweet mint tea and your first impression of Morocco. I had a tiny room for the first night and was then upgraded to a bigger room. For maximum enjoyment, I would recommend paying the extra for a room with a terrace but then you hardly spend time in your room in a city as exciting and exotic as Marrakech. I would certainly stay here again. The neighbourhood is local but not too far away is the chaos of the Souks - the best of both worlds.

We booked an Expedia deal to Marrakech to stay at the Hotel Catalina in the Medina..From the start, we were looked after so well. I had paid for a better room, which I do not think was ready but Nadia 'upgraded' us to a suite, so that we could leave our luggage and change to be able to get out into the thick of it. What an exciting vibrant exotic city full of buzz and yet very kind people. The (though you can haggle there too, we discovered) We got out of our depth on the first but we had booked an Expedia half day monuments tour and ended up extending it to the full day.Well worth it. We enjoyed every bit. Suggest you book a tour after the first day when you have a guide to explain some of the history and take you into buildings you might miss. Places we recommed: Cafe de Spices in the Northern Souk and Al Fassia for an expensive but really top class eating experience. Tagines everywhere you go, but better to get a better class of lamb!!! The hotel had a small pool on a top floor terrace, which was heaven for cooling one's feet (not much more) and relaxing. It was quiet, well situated (though you have to walk through a rather grubby labyrinth to get there) and the staff were utterly lovely..making phone calls for us and giving us advice and being hospitable right to the end. Highly recommend it. Though we would say that 3 nights in Marrakech is enough!

I stayed here in August of 2010 when it was about 130 degrees outside. The best thing about this hotel is that it is only about 5 minute walk to Jemma El Fna, which is the biggest attraction in Marrakech. The only downturn is that it is impossible to find this Riad without asking about 100 people. But then that is the same for everything else inside the Medina. Be prepare to call the hotel and ask for assistance, or ask everyone on the street... Once you find it, you are OK. This is a 5 star Riad, not a 5 star modern hotel. I wanted to experience the Riad, so I booked here. Well, based on my experience, 5 star riad is about 3 star motel... But then you have to consider the fact that you are in Morocco, not Hawaii.... It was definitely a different experience than staying at a regular hotel. The service was great, people were friendly, and the manager was very helpful and nice. I had a 7 AM flight to catch, and the staff actually prepared breakfast at 4:30 in the morning. Now, this is what I call a personalized service!!! Then he escorted me to the taxi at 5 AM. Great service. AC works great here, so that is another plus.

Having picked Riad Catalina from other reviews, it was a pleasure and a surprise for the reviews to have been correct. We got a lift from the airport that the riad had organised - just email them and they will sort out - am sure that we could have done it ourselves, but lovely to be treated for a change! Beautiful room, in the middle of Marrakech, but NO city noise despite location - it must be the design of the city. The riad and its staff were superb, could not have asked for more. Everything that we asked about/asked for, we got, from restaurant recommendations, suggestions on trips in their city, to a lovely local bottle of wine with olives/nuts etc to enjoy on the terrace by our room. The pool is really a plunge pool, but if you are expecting olympic sized pool on a roof top, then... We didn't eat an evening meal at the riad, but the breakfasts were lovely, with little changes everyday, so it was never the same. Really can't find enough praise for the riad, the staff and Marrakech itself, just fantastic.

Central part of the Riad was lovely, built round a courtyard and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had 2 rooms in a separate building, which were slightly gloomy and dark. The Expedia rep - Omar - was really excellent, he provided lots of help and organised a hire car for us. He definitely made the stay in Marrakesh a lot easier.

It's a bit hard to find at first and most probably you will need to ask someone to direct you--but that's not a big exception in Marrakech. The hotel is a beauty and it's not on a main road, so it's very quiet at night even though it's very close from the plaza. Good thing it has a swimming pool, because there will be a time that you will want to use one. Mostly guests were French or Belgian and most came as couples. You can really enjoy this beautiful riad and make it an unforgettable experience.

We stayed 4 nights at the Riad Catalina and it was a perfect base from which to explore Marrakech. The courtyard is shady and full of trees and the sounds of birds and water. Our room was very small with no windows, but we were assured this was usual in a riad and to be honest we found it nice and cool in the day time so it was no problem. The food was only okay. Breakfast was mainly bread and there was no fresh fruit to speak of which was disappointing. Dinner which we had once was very expensive and we would have eaten out had we checked the price - there are so many amazing restaurants and open air places to eat nearby. We went to Villa Flora which is about 10 mins walk through the alleyways and very atmospheric. On check out we had booked a taxi to the airport (about a 10 min journey). Another couple were leaving and so we offered to share but the receptionist said 2 cars were already waiting. This turned out to be untrue and almost soured our view of the hotel. Fortunately this was the only bad thing that happened and we got a full refund for the £20 fare. A bit of a let down from an otherwise perfect hotel. My advice: Just walk out the front door and hail a taxi to the airport - it was £6!! The waiter/porter Yousef was a star and made up for the receptionist though!

we were very impressed with the Riad Catalina. We had booked, without realising, in the Dar Catalina which has access to the Riad Catalina facilities but is further up the alleyway and with very small and slightly dim rooms, but with very friendly help from the staff we were able to upgrade to a suite in the Riad for 2 nights then stay in a Riad standard room for 2 more nights. The suites, with their own rooftop terrace, are simply gorgeous but the Riad standard rooms are also light and charming... this is a luxury hotel made out of an old building so nothing is perfect - hot water intermittent in the suite, showers spray water in eccentric directions, individual aircon can be noisy, steep windy stairs and so on - but everything is stylishly converted and charming. The heart of the Riad is the central courtyard with doves, sparrows, lightning fast tortoises and so on, and excellent food and drinks very well served by dedicated, friendly staff, under the orange tree and other foliage... The Riad is effectively in the Souk, not just in the Medina - at the end of the alleyway the shops start and in a few minutes you are inside the full Souk so very close, the main square is 5-10 mins walk, but with all the bustle nearby the hotel itself is peaceful and calm Overall if we want to combine a romantic, relaxing base with the excitement of Marrakech streets we would highly recommend the Riad Catalina.

Great service, location, and food, but the rooms are very small and the walls are thin so you can hear conversations in the hall / next room - I understand that most riads have this problem so take ear plugs and don't stay there if you have kids! Also the air condititioner / heater in our room made an annoying noise, even when switched off, which got louder throughout the night (and was silent in the day - grr!) Bathroom is pretty and ok facilities but again very small. The hotel seemed nicer than most similar hotels in the Medina, but I probably wouldn't stay there again as you can get much better value for money a little further from the centre. I'm not convinced it deserves the 5* Expedia give it (Thomson give it 4* which is more accurate). That said it is beautiful, with lovely people in a central location.

We found the hotel satisfactory regarding comfort and cleanliness but the room we were shown on arrival was the smallest I have ever seen with no windows and accessed by a small steep staircase with low ceiling. If we hadn't been able to change our room, I think we would have had a miserable stay. However, they were good about changing our room and the staff were generally very helpful and kind. The big plus is the location of the hotel, close to the main square and easy access to most of the sights in the city, once you realise that the location issued on the websites is wrong and the hotel is not where you think it is (we got hopelessly lost as we had plotted our position on our map from the website before we arrived!!) it is easy to find you way around.

It's hard to imagine a nicer hotel or a better location for such a reasonable price. The Catalina is an oasis of peace and quiet in this fascinating bustling city. Beautiful courtyard, great traditional style room (don't expect Holiday Inn but you will be very conmfortable) with small but gorgeous rooftop pool with great views. It does gourmet meals in the evening and a pleasant filling breakfasts (Moroccan pancakes are a bit unusual!) Very friendley and helpful staff and they booked a v good day trip for me to the Atlas Mtns (not cheap). The riad's location is wonderful, very traditional narrow alleys ( abit of a amaze so get a good map and remember the route!) just 10 mins from Jamaa el Fna which is THE SQUARE where it happens and from which you can find anything. Highly recommended.

We found the Riad Catalina conveniently close to the bustle of the Jemaa el Fna but a pleasant relief from the noise of the crowds. The rooms were fairly small, but comfortable and clean. Being a Riad, don't expect views from the room: the windows all overlook the central courtyard that forms the hub of the building. However, the roof terrace gives views over the city, especially the nearby Koutoubia Mosque, which is lit up at night. We were actually in the Dar Catalina, a smaller courtyard house just around the corner from the main hotel. It was very pleasant, but (being empty apart from us) lacked the character of the main riad. We ate out every evening, but the riad did offer a Moroccan style evening meal. Breakfast was served in the courtyard, surrounded by shade trees, with sparrows playing in the fountain. It's not too difficult to find Riad Catalina: take the bus from the airport (easy, and cheaper than a taxi) and get off at the Place Foucauld; the first main stop. Walk up the Rue Fatima Zohra and take the first turn on the right, through the arch. Take the first right through another arch into a narrow road, then follow the painted signs. NB The street sign on the road says "Derb Moulay Abdallah ben Hezzaien" - this is somewhat different from the way it is spelt in the riad's address! Look at the map on the Riad's website. The road is drawn on most of the guidebook maps we saw, but not normally labelled.

A perfect oasis in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, Riad Catalina is a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The staff are wonderful - helpful and pleasant, any time of day or night, and the Riad's dog - Charlie - who wanders the courtyard is another friendly face. Only a few minutes walk from the souks and main square,Djemma el-Fna, Catalina is perfectly located, and also serves up fantastic food to rival many of the restaurants in Marrakech. We thoroughly enjoyed two weeks of sightseeing and relaxing at the Riad - the sun terrace and rooftop swimming pool are a pleasant retreat! Would visit again, without a doubt.

Even arriving at 0300 (cancelled flights etc!) we were still met at the airport and driven to the Riad . The staff were always welcoming and friendly and the evening meal (set dish) was exquisite - better than any of the restaurants we visited. Although tucked away down a series of small alleys on the edge of the souks, we always felt perfectly safe walking back late at night. The Riad Catalina only has a dozen rooms, some quite small but you don't go to Marrakech to stay in your room! Perfectposition for visiting the souks, the night market and many of the other attractions. Thoroughly recommended. (PS Charlie the dog is a star!!)
